If you teach Civics, History, Politics, Economics, or Law, you’ve got to check out Civic Mirror. Many grade 10 Civics teachers in Grand Erie are already using CM with their students.
Civic Mirror is a simulation-based program that turns classrooms into countries and students into citizens. I’ve seen students in action working on Civic Mirror and the level of engagement is through the roof. Students have families and own properties & businesses. They need to provide food, housing & education for themselves and their families. As a class/country, they need to establish their government, finances, and legal system. All of this leads them to learn about Canadian (or American) systems currently in place and promotes awareness and discussion about how existing systems could be improved.
To learn more about CM, check out the Civic Mirror Site, the Grand Erie Ed Tech Wiki, and/or the video below.
If you’re a high school teacher in Grand Erie and you’re interested in using Civic Mirror with your students, please email me at jeffery.dumoulin@granderie.ca and I’ll help get you set up. The Grand Erie Ed Tech Initiative has already purchased licenses for all Civics teachers. If you teach other courses that you’d like to use CM for, please contact me and we can discuss your options.
